UC Irvine Opens Big West Action With Sweep Over UC Riverside
Sept. 27, 2008 RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Outside hitter Lauren Kellerman registered a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs as UC Irvine opened Big West Conference action with a sweep (25-21, 25-18, 25-17) over UC Riverside Saturday. The win lifted the Anteaters to 6-8 (1-0) overall while the Highlanders dropped to 5-11 (0-1) on the season. Kellerman's 15 kills were a match-high as the outside hitter also added a service ace and a block assist. Kari Pestolesi recorded a season-best .324 average, committing just three errors in 34 attempts while putting away 14 kills. Devon Sutherland led the team with 13 digs while setter Taryn Robertson recorded 38 assists. Riley Cropper led the team with two block assists while recording six kills. Shannan Homan committed a lone error while coming away with eight kills. The Anteaters used a 4-1 run in the first set to distance themselves from the Highlanders and take a 17-14 lead on a kill from Pestolesi to force a UCR timeout. UCR rallied to tie the match at 18 points apiece on a pair of block assists from Brittney Murrey and Raquel Salinas. However at 21-21, UCI strung together four straight points with the Highlanders committing attack errors in the final two plays of the set. UCI stormed out to a 16-5 lead in the second set with Alexandra Filkins serving for seven points in the rally. Trailing 24-12, UCR managed to score six straight points with the Anteaters committing five attack errors in the run. Robertson connected with Kellerman to seal the set.
The Highlanders, who were held to a .097 percentage, continued to struggle in the third set. UCI held UCR to a negative .034 average and cruised to an 18-9 lead on a kill from Filkins. The Anteaters never looked back and Robertson found Kellerman again on match point for the win.
