UC Irvine Loses to Cal State Fullerton
Oct. 4, 2008 IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine was handed its first Big West loss of the season, falling 3-1 (25-18, 25-17, 11-25, 25-21) to Cal State Fullerton Saturday at Crawford Court. The loss dropped the Anteaters to 7-9 overall (2-1 Big West) while the Titans climbed to 2-2 (8-10 overall) in conference matches. UC Irvine's Kari Pestolesi recorded a season-high 17 digs to lead the team while pacing the offense with 16 kills for her ninth double-double match of the season. Four Anteaters followed with six kills apiece with Alexandra Hauser topping the quartet with an errorless performance. The redshirt freshman connected on six of nine attempts for a .667 average and led the team with four block assists as UCI out-blocked the Titans 7-5.5. Riley Cropper belted a .417 clip,recording just one error in 12 attempts with six kills. Devon Sutherland added 14 digs while Taryn Robertson totaled 41 assists, nine digs and two block assists in the effort. UC Irvine opened the first set with a 4-0 run but Cal State Fullerton quickly closed the gap with three straight points. The two teams kept the set close but at 15-15, the Titans rattled off five consecutive points with UCI committing three errors in the run. CSF widened the margin to seven at 24-17 and sealed the win on a kill from Brittany Moore. The Titans used a similar run in the second set, scoring six points to establish an 11-7 lead. UC Irvine cut the lead to two on a kill from Shannan Homan but CSF out-scored UCI 7-2 to take a 23-16 advantage and never looked back as Moore again delivered the set-winning blow.
The Anteaters jumped out early in the third frame, taking an 11-6 lead on a kill from Pestolesi. At 11-7, UCI scored seven straight points to hold a comfortable 18-7 lead. Cal State Fullerton followed with three consecutive kills but at 20-11, UCI capitalized on a pair of unforced errors and scored five straight points to avoid the sweep.
UCI was unable to use its momentum in the third set as the Titans opened the set with an 8-2 rally and take a 10-5 lead. The Anteaters trailed by as many as 10 points at 19-9 but battled back to cut the deficit to two points at 23-21 and force a Titan timeout. However, CSF came out of the huddle and went to Erin Saddler and Moore on consecutive plays to end the match. |
