UC Irvine Loses to Cal Poly 3-1
Oct. 18, 2008 SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- Senior Devon Sutherland picked up a season-high 26 digs but UC Irvine was unable to get past Cal Poly, falling 25-21, 20-25, 25-23, 25-15 Saturday at Mott Gym. The Anteaters dropped to 4-3 in the Big West (9-11) while Cal Poly climbed to 11-7 (6-1) overall. Lauren Kellerman posted a double-double with 19 kills and 13 digs while Kari Pestolesi added 15 kills and 12 digs. Alexandra Filkins matched a career-high with 11 kills while adding eight digs and setter Taryn Robertson recorded 46 assists and eight digs in the effort. The Anteaters out-dug Cal Poly 75-66 but the Mustangs won the battle at the net, posting 24 block assists to UCI's six. Cal Poly used a five-point run in the first set to open up a 12-7 lead over the Anteaters. The deficit increased to seven at 17-10 on a UCI service error but the Anteaters rallied and managed to close the deficit to three on back-to-back kills from Kellerman (21-18). That was as close as UCI would come. Following an attack error by Kylie Atherstone, Hailey Fithian found Dominique Olowolafe for the set-winning kill. The Mustangs took a 10-7 lead in the second set and would hold off the Anteaters until UC Irvine tied the match at 17-17 on a Cal Poly attack error. A Filkins kill give UCI its first lead at 19-18 and at Robertson connected with Shannan Homan and Pestolesi on consecutive plays for a 22-19 edge. Following a Cal Poly kill, Pestolesi's put-away was followed by two Mustang miscues to end the set.
The third set mirrored the previous with the Anteaters coming from behind to tie the score at 14-14 as Filkins and Homan paired up to deny Gaby Rivera at the net and prompt a Cal Poly timeout. Four consecutive errors gave UCI a 21-18 lead but the Mustangs rattled off five straight points to reclaim the advantage at 23-21. The Anteaters close the gap to one at 24-23 but Rivera sealed the set with a kill.
Cal Poly out-scored UCI 10-5 in the final set and would never relinquish the lead. The Mustangs led comfortably for most of the set, increasing the lead to much as 10 points at 20-11 and cruised to a 25-15 win to end the match. |
