UC Irvine Records Season-High in Service Aces in UC Riverside Sweep

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine fired a season-high 11 service aces and hit a team-best .375 as the Anteaters cruised past UC Riverside 25-9, 25-9, 25-16 Saturday in Big West Conference action at Crawford Court. UCI climbed to 10-11 overall and 5-3 in league action while the Highlanders dropped to 7-16 (2-6) overall. Outside hitter Kari Pestolesi led the Anteaters from the baseline, matching a career-high with five aces while Devon Sutherland followed with a season-high four service winners, one shy of her personal best. Pestolesi put away eight kills to tie for the team-high with Shannan Homan, who committed just one error in 14 attempts for a .500 average. Setter Taryn Robertson was four of seven in attack attempts while tossing up 25 assists. Alexandra Filkins recorded an errorless night, connecting on five of seven attempts for a .714 percentage and Sutherland picked up a match-high nine digs. UC Irvine controlled the tempo in the first set, jumping out to a 9-6 lead and then scored five straight to increase the advantage to 14-6 on a UC Riverside attack error. At 17-8, the Anteaters put together a seven-point run (24-8) and took the first frame on a service error from Raquel Salinas.
The Anteaters established the early lead again in the second set at 11-7 on a kill from Homan. Following a put-away from UCR's Kelly Simpson, the Anteaters scored 10 consecutive points, with Pestolesi recording four service aces in the rally, to lead 21-8. A kill from Kelly Fink briefly halted the UCI run but the Anteaters sealed the set by scoring the final four points.
In the final set, UCI used a 7-1 run to turn a 4-3 edge into an 11-4 lead. The Anteaters never looked back and established their first nine-point lead at 20-11 as McCall Miller and Alexandra Hauser paired up to block Shannon Moyneur. Larissa Nordyke gave the Anteaters, putting away the assist from Ashley Bosza. |
