IRVINE, Calif. --- Four Anteaters recorded double-digit kills as No. 19 UC Irvine defeated Cal Poly, 22-25, 25-10, 25-21, 24-26, 15-11 Saturday in Big West action at Crawford Court. The win lifted UCI to 17-4 overall and 7-2 conference play while the Mustangs dropped to 6-17 (2-8) overall.

Juliane Piggott led the Anteaters with 15 kills while adding 13 digs and five blocks. Kari Pestolesi totaled 12 kills and 15 digs and Taryn Robertson also registered a double-double with a career-high 10 kills with 46 assists. Alexandra Filkins sparked the Anteaters with a season-high 10 kills, committing just two errors in 16 swings for a .500 hitting percentage. Alexandra Hauser led UCI to an 8-6 block advantage with a career-high seven block assists. Hauser also keyed the team offensively, putting away eight of 11 attempts with no errors to hit .727. Riley Cropper logged an error-less performance, knocking down six of 12 attempts for a .500 clip. Libero Kristin Winkler picked up a team-high 24 digs to register her second consecutive match with 20 or more scoops.

Cal Poly was led by Jennifer Keddy, who had 12 kills while Chelsea Hardin added 11 kills and 10 digs. Alison Mort recorded the team-high with 27 digs while Anuhea Keanini handed out 54 assists.

The Anteaters found themselves down early in the first set as Cal Poly jumped out to a 10-4 lead on an attack error by Larissa Nordyke. Trailing 14-7, Pestolesi delivered three kills to highlight a four-point run to close the gap to three (14-11). A second three-point run by UCI knotted the score at 17 but following Nordyke's cross-court kill to tie the set at 22-22, Cal Poly scored the final three points to take the set.

 

 

It was all UCI in the second frame as the team boasted a .400 hitting percentage, recording just one error in 25 attempts. The Anteaters scored eight unanswered points to lead 16-5 and never looked back. Piggott's ace to give the team set point and a service error by Keddy tied the match at a set apiece.

The momentum continued for the Anteaters in the third frame as UCI opened an early 10-5 lead on a blocking error by Hardin. The Mustangs closed the gap to two points at 19-17 on a put-away from Catie Smith but UCI answered with a pair of kills from Hauser. Hauser and Pestolesi sent back a Holly Franks attempt for set point and Robertson went to Pestolesi for the game-winning point.

Two attack errors by Molly Pon gave UCI a 10-7 lead in the fourth set but the Mustangs reeled off four straight points to take an 11-10 lead. The Anteaters went on a late four-point run capped by a kill from Robertson to take a 20-17 edge but kills by Smith and Hardin followed by a UCI error tied the set at 21-21. Filkins' delivered a shot down the line to give UCI set point but Smith answered with a kill Keanini found Olowolafe on consecutive plays to force a fifth game.

UCI stormed out to an 8-4 lead in the final frame as Piggott and Robertson combined for five kills. The Mustangs rallied but were unable to catch the Anteaters, who hit .435 in the set. Robertson connected with Piggott for match point at 14-9 and Cal Poly answered with kills by Franks and Pon but Franks was called for the blocking error to end the match.
