UC Irvine Handles Cal State Northridge
Nov. 1, 2008
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- UC Irvine out-blocked Cal State Northridge 20-12 as the Anteaters defeated Cal State Northridge 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-21) Saturday at the Matadome. With the win, UCI climbed to 12-11 overall and 7-3 in the Big West while the Matadors dropped to 6-19 (1-11) overall. Alexandra Hauser led the Anteaters at the net with five block assists while Shannan Homan and Taryn Robertson added four block assists apiece. Offensively, Kari Pestolesi led all players with 16 kills. Alexandra Filkins registered a career-high 12 kills, eight digs, three total blocks and a service ace. Lauren Kellerman poured in 12 kills while Devon Sutherland fired three service aces and was one of three Anteaters to total 13 digs. Robertson handed out 47 assists while registering nine digs and an ace. UCI took the early 12-9 lead in the first set on back-to-back attack errors by CSUN. However, the Matadors used a six-run rally to take the lead at 22-18 and went on to win the first set on a UCI miscue. The Anteaters took the early lead again in the second set at 11-6 on a Filkins service ace. CSUN rattled off three straight points to narrow the margin at 11-9 and came as close as two points at 16-14. Leading 19-17, UCI then scored five straight to claim a 24-17 lead and tied the match on a Matador service error by Tela Burnett.
UCI rallied from behind in the third set with four consecutive points to catch the Matadors at 10 points apiece. At 14-14, Pestolesi and Homan denied Val Kepler at the net and consecutive kills by Pestolesi and Sutherland spurred a CSUN timeout at 17-14. That is as close as the Matadors would come and Robertson found Pestolesi for the winning point.
In the final set, UCI claimed a 3-2 edge and never relinquished the lead. Holding off the Matadors by one point at 12-11, the Anteaters rattled off eight straight points to lead comfortably at 20-11. CSUN used a late four-point run to close the gap to three at 23-20 on a service ace by Amy Hultner but following a service error, the Anteaters used the triple block of Hauser, Robertson and Kellerman to block an Angela Hupp attempt for the win. |
