Women's Volleyball:
McCall Miller Leads UC Irvine in Sweep of Seattle
Nov. 3, 2009 IRVINE, Calif. --- Senior McCall Miller recorded a season-high 18 kills and hit .343 as UC Irvine swept Seattle, 25-19, 25-22, 25-21, Tuesday in a non-conference match at Crawford Court. The win lifted the Anteaters to 18-6 overall while the Redhawks fell to 6-20 on the season. Miller also totaled 11 digs for a double-double while Kari Pestolesi, playing libero, scooped up a season-high 26 digs while adding a service ace. Juliane Piggott committed just one error, putting away eight of 23 attempts for a .304 clip while setter Marissa Alvarez handed out 39 assists to go along with eight digs and four kills. Courtney Moeller chipped in four kills while recording two aces and three digs. Seattle was led by Cristin Richards, who had 14 kills and 13 digs while Kaytlyn Dill put away eight kills while picking up 10 digs. Jamie Mellies dealt out 31 assists while totaling 13 digs and Megan Augustavo totaled 12 digs and three aces. The two teams kept the first set close until Seattle scored four straight on three kills and a UCI attack error to turn a two-point deficit into a two-point (17-15) lead. However, the Anteaters responded with a four-point rally of their own, capped by a kill by Miller to lead 19-17. Following a kill by Dill, UCI reeled off five consecutive points to close out the set.
The Anteaters took the early lead in the second set, going on a 5-1 run to lead 14-9 following Piggott's cross-court slam. Seattle trimmed the deficit to two points at 17-15 but UCI scored four straight for the 21-16 advantage. At 23-16 the Redhawks mounted a furious rally, scoring six points with Augustavo firing back-to-back baseline winners in the run. Alvarez connected with Miller to record set point and Dill's serve went into the net to close out the second frame.
In the final set, Alvarez dished the ball to three different hitters as UCI pulled away from a 14-14 tie and took a three-point lead. Two UCI errors closed the gap to one at 17-16 but the Anteaters responded with three straight for a 20-16 lead. Miller put the ball away to give UCI match point at 24-18 and following a three-point run by the Redhawks, Alvarez dumped the ball into the open court for the game-winning point. UCI resumes Big West action Saturday against Cal State Northridge at Crawford Court. |
