UC Irvine Defeats UC Davis, 3-1
Nov. 7, 2008 IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine hit better than .400 in the final two sets to defeat UC Davis, 22-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-17, Friday at Crawford Court. The win lifted the Anteaters to two games above .500 at 13-11 (8-3 Big West) while the Aggies dropped to 11-14 overall and 3-9 in league play. Alexandra Filkins registered her sixth consecutive week with a career high, putting away 13 kills. The outside hitter had just three errors in 25 attempts for a .400 average. Kari Pestolesi tied for the match-high with 16 kills and picked up 14 digs while Lauren Kellerman pounded 13 kills and fired a service winner. Devon Sutherland led all players with 20 digs. Middle blocker Alexandra Hauser hit .455, connecting on 6 of 11 attempts with one miscue and setter Taryn Robertson dealt out 50 assists while topping UCI with four total blocks. UC Davis broke away early in the first set, establishing a four-point lead on a UCI attack error. The Anteaters managed to close the gap to one point at 21-20 and again at 22-21 but UCI committed errors on back-to-back plays to trail 24-21. The Aggies closed out the set with a kill by Julie King.
Neither team was effective in the second set as both the Aggies and Anteaters managed just a .154 hitting percentage for the frame. UCI broke away from a 16-16 tie with three straight points but UC Davis responded with a three-point rally of its own to close the gap to one at 21-20. Robertson connected with Riley Cropper to give UCI a two-point edge and the teams would trade points until a Robertson kill on a UC Davis overpass would give UCI set point. Kellerman delivered with a cross-court shot for the game-winner.
It would be the Anteaters again, who would break away at the mid-point of the set, out-scoring the Aggies 9-1 to turn a 14-13 deficit into a 22-15 lead. UC Davis came as close as five points at 23-17 but Robertson keyed a Pestolesi kill and then paired up with Shannan Homan on the ensuing play to deny Kayla Varney at the net. UCI used its momentum in set No. 3 to take an early 12-7 lead in the final frame and held off the Aggies for most of the set. UC Davis came to within three at 20-17 but the Anteaters scored the final five points with Hauser coming up with the winning point. |
