SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Senior Lauren Kellerman recorded a team-high 13 kills to lead UC Irvine to a 3-1 (25-16, 19-25, 25-22, 25-17) win Saturday in Big West action at the Thunderdome. The decision lifted UCI to 15-12 overall and 10-4 in the Big West while the Gauchos dropped to 10-15 (6-8) overall.

Alexandra Filkins recorded 12 kills with one error in 19 attempts for a .579 hitting percentage while picking up 10 digs. Alexandra Hauser tied a career-best with six block assists while totaling seven kills and Kari Pestolesi added a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs. Devon Sutherland paced the team with 19 digs and Taryn Robertson handed out 41 assists in the win.

UCI jumped out to a four-point lead at 13-9 on a Gaucho attack error by Rebecca Saraceno in the first set. UCSB closed the gap to one at 15-14 but the Anteaters scored three straight, capped by a Pestolesi ace, to reclaim a four-point edge at 18-14. UCI added a five-point rally to lead 22-15 and went on to win on a service error by Nikki Doyle.

The two teams battled in the second set but it was the Gauchos who were the first to pull away from a 10-10 tie and take a 16-12 lead. UCI cut the lead to two at 16-14 on a Saraceno attack error but UCSB went on a 5-1 run to widen the margin to six at 21-15. The Gauchos scored the final three points to finish the set with Dana Vargas firing a service winner.

The Anteaters established an early 10-5 lead and led by as many as eight at 17-9 on a kill from Kellerman. The Gauchos rallied and caught the Anteaters at 20-20 but UC Irvine's McCall Miller aced Doyle from the baseline for a two-point lead (22-20). Filkins and Larissa Nordyke sent back a Saraceno attempt and Filkins and Hauser delivered at the net on set-point for the win.

 

 

UCI carried its momentum into set No. 4 and out-scored the Gauchos 9-1 to lead 12-4 on consecutive kills from Pestolesi. UCSB never threatened and was held to an .073 percentage in the final frame.

The Anteaters play their final home matches Nov. 21 and 22 against UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly, respectively.
