UC Irvine Defeats UC Santa Barbara 3-2
Nov. 21, 2008 IRVINE, Calif. --- Shannan Homan recorded a career-high 16 kills and Devon Sutherland picked up a career-high 31 digs to lead UC Irvine to a 3-2 (27-29, 25-20, 16-25, 25-13, 15-10) win over UC Santa Barbara Friday at Crawford Court. The win lifted the Anteaters to 16-12 overall and 11-4 in the Big West while the Gauchos dropped to 10-16 (6-9) overall. Homan was errorless in the fifth set, going 5 for 6 with an .833 hitting percentage in the deciding frame while Lauren Kellerman also added five kills, hitting .429 (5-2-7) as the duo combined for 10 of the Anteaters' 14 kills. Kellerman tied for the match-high with 19 kills. Kari Pestolesi had 17 kills and 28 digs while Alexandra Filkins also added a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs. Setter Taryn Robertson handed out a season-high 59 assists while delivering four block assists, including one solo stuff. UC Santa Barbara used a three-point run to take a 14-10 lead in the first set on a UCI attack error. Trailing 15-11, UC Irvine then put together a six-point rally to claim a 17-15 lead but the Gauchos quickly tied the match at 17-17 on a kill from Rebecca Saraceno. The set was pushed into extra points and UCI tied the match at 27-27 on a kill from Kellerman but UCSB went to Lauren McLaughlin and Lindsay Fletcher on back-to-back plays for the win.
UCI established a three-point lead at 12-9 on a kill from Kellerman and extended the lead to four on a back-row kill from McCall Miller (17-13). The Gauchos rallied to tie the score at 18 points apiece but the Anteaters responded with five unanswered points to force a UCSB timeout at 23-18. Filkins and Alexandra Hauser blocked a Saraceno attempt following the break and the duo delivered again on Saraceno to give UCI set point (24-19). Robertson found Pestolesi for the set-winner.
In the third set, UCSB battled to turn a 7-4 deficit into a 9-7 lead and would later put together a five-point run to lead comfortably at 21-13. Lily Lopez came up with the kill for set point and Lopez recorded the solo block to give the Gauchos a 2-1 set lead. The Anteaters used a .353 hitting percentage to control the fourth frame. At 12-11, the Anteaters scored nine consecutive points as Robertson spread the offense, finding Homan, Kellerman and Pestolesi on multiple plays. Pestolesi capped the run with a solo block on Charlene DeHoog. Kellerman crushed a shot down the line for set point and Hauser and Robertson denied Kasey Kipp to force the fifth set. In the final set, UCI took a 6-3 lead and prompted the side change at 8-5 on the cross-court kill from Kellerman. UCSB cut the lead to two at 10-8 but Robertson went to Homan on consecutive plays for a 12-9 advantage and it would be Homan again with a shot off the UCSB block for the 14-10 lead. Robertson put away a Kellerman set for the win. The Anteaters square off against Cal Poly Saturday to conclude the regular season. |
