UCI TAKES ON HIGHLANDERS: UC Irvine (9-11 overall, 4-3 Big West) entertains UC Riverside Saturday in the Anteaters` lone match of the week. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

THE STANDINGS: UC Irvine remains in a tie for fourth with Cal State Fullerton and UC Santa Barbara at 4-3 in the Big West. Cal Poly took over the top spot in the conference at 6-1 while Long Beach State is second at 5-2. Pacific dropped to third with at 5-3. UC Riverside is fifth at 2-5.

KELLERMAN NAMED BIG WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Outside hitter Lauren Kellerman (Escondido/HS) earned UC Irvine’s first Big West Player of the Week award this season after recording a season-high 21 kills and a team-high 13 digs to lead UC Irvine to a 3-1 upset over No. 24 Long Beach State. The senior committed just three errors in 48 swings to hit .375 for the match as UC Irvine snapped a six-match losing streak against The Beach. It was just the seventh win all time for the Anteaters against LBSU. Kellerman continued her hot hitting over the weekend, leading the Anteaters with 19 kills against Cal Poly and recording her second consecutive double-double match of the weekend with 13 digs. Kellerman hit .271 against the Mustangs to hit a combined .323 in weekend action. In eight sets Kellerman averaged five kills and 3.25 digs per set.

Kellerman is second on the team with 223 kills and a 3.33 per set average. Kellerman is also second with 13 aces and third with 158 digs.


 

 

FILKINS PUTS UP CAREER-BEST IN BLOCKS: Alexandra Filkins (Seal Beach/Los Alamitos HS) recorded a career-high with five block assists to lead UCI to a 10-3 block advantage over Long Beach State. Filkins then matched a career-high with 11 kills against Cal Poly Saturday. The outside hitter also registered a career-high with 23 attempts in both matches last week. Against the Mustangs, Filkins committed just five errors for a .261 average while scooping up eight digs.

In Big West matches, Filkins is third on the team with 44 kills and a .229 hitting percentage. She is also fourth in digs with 55 and has logged 12 total blocks.

PESTOLESI FIRES CAREER-HIGH: Kari Pestolesi (Huntington Beach/Edison HS) fired a career-high five service aces against Long Beach State. After logging five straight matches without a service ace, Pestolesi has now registered at least one service winner in five of the last six matches. The sophomore leads the team with 23 aces and is averaging .35 per set.

Pestolesi also recorded her 12th and 13th double-double matches of the season, putting up 16 kills against the 49ers and 15 against Cal Poly while picking up 12 digs each against both teams. She tops the team with 244 kills and a 3.70 per-set average. She is also second with 204 digs.

SUTHERLAND SCOOPS UP SEASON-BEST: Devon Sutherland (Corona/Santiago HS) had a season-high, totaling a match-high 26 digs against Cal Poly. The senior libero, who has registered double-figure digs in all but two matches this season, logged her second match of 20 or more digs.

Sutherland tops the team with 283 digs and is averaging a conference-best 4.16 per-set average. She is also tied for third on the team with eight service aces.

HOMAN CONTINUES WEEKEND TREND WITH CAREER-BEST: Shannan Homan (Placentia/Wake Forest) displayed her talent from beyond the baseline, recording three service aces against Long Beach State for a career-high. Homan is now tied for third with eight service aces on the season and is averaging 0.12 per set.

RIVERSIDE RECAP: UC Riverside is 7-15 overall and 2-5 in the Big West. The Highlanders are led by Kelly Fink, who has 273 kills on the season. Kimberly McNeal leads the team in digs with 202 while Angela Pizzella tops the team with 55 total blocks.

THE SERIES: UC Irvine is 19-10 against UC Riverside and swept the Highlanders earlier this season.

ANTEATERS IN THE BIG WEST: Robertson remains league leader in assist average at 11.06 while Devon Sutherland (4.16) holds the edge over Long Beach State`s Iris Murray, who holds a 3.99 per-set dig average. Pestolesi holds steady at second in the conference with a 3.70 kill average and climbed one spot to fifth service aces at .35. Kellerman appeared in the top 10 sporting a 3.36 kill average. Alexandra Hauser (Chino Hills/Ayala HS) is sixth in hitting percentage at .280 while Shannan Homan is 10th at .256.

As a team, UCI is first in kills (14.15) and assists (13.06) and is second in digs (15.45) and hitting percentage at .234. The Anteaters are fifth in blocks at 2.03.

ANTEATER ALUMNAE ON KARCH`S KRONICLES: Former Anteaters Ashlie Hain, Whitney Pavlik and Kelly Wing will appear on "Karch's Khronicles" on FOX SPORTS WEST and PRIME TICKET. In the two-minute segments designed to enhance Pac-10 volleyball coverage, Olympic Gold medalist Karch Kiraly will explain offensive systems, defensive coverage and coaching strategies using former players from UC Irvine and Irvine Valley College to demonstrate the drills. WEEKEND WRAPUP: UC Irvine went 1-1, upsetting No. 24 Long Beach State, 3-1, before falling to Cal Poly in four sets.

Lauren Kellerman led all players with a season-high 21 kills and topped the team with 13 digs. Kari Pestolesi added 16 kills and 12 digs while middle blocker Shannan Homan totaled five kills and four total blocks including a solo stuff. Riley Cropper (Seal Beach/Los Alamitos HS) put up four block assists while Devon Sutherland notched 11 digs for the defense. Setter Taryn Robertson (Valencia/HS) handed out 43 assists and scooped up six digs while putting away six kills in the win.

Sutherland led all players with 26 digs while Kellerman posted a double-double with 19 kills and 13 digs. Pestolesi added 15 kills and 12 digs. Filkins matched a career-high with 11 kills while Robertson recorded 46 assists and eight digs. The Anteaters out-dug Cal Poly 75-66.
