UC Irvine Travels to Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge

UCI FACES TITANS, MATADORS: UC Irvine (10-11 overall, 5-3 Big West) travels to Cal State Fullerton Thursday (Oct. 30) and Cal State Northridge Saturday (Nov. 1). Start times for the two matches are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. THE STANDINGS: UC Irvine climbed one spot to third in the Big West at 5-3. Cal Poly (8-1) and Long Beach State (7-2) are first and second, respectively. The Titans share fourth place with UC Santa Barbara and Pacific at 5-4. Check the Listen Live page for more information. ANTEATERS REGISTER SEASON-HIGHS AGAINST HIGHLANDERS: UC Irvine recorded a pair of season-high marks in the win against UC Riverside. The team fired 11 service aces, led by Kari Pestolesi (Huntington Beach/Edison HS) who matched a career-high with five, and also registered a .375 hitting percentage. It was the first time UCI had reached double-figures in aces this season as the team surpassed its previous high of nine, recorded against Long Beach State. The Anteaters committed just six errors in 80 attempts while putting away 36 kills to sweep UCR. SUTHERLAND ONE SHY OF CAREER-HIGH: Libero Devon Sutherland (Corona/Santiago HS) fell one service ace shy of her career-best with four baseline winners against UCR. Sutherland also led the team with nine digs, just the third time this season the senior has not reached double-digit digs. Sutherland currently tops the team with 292 digs and a Big West-leading 4.11 average. She is also third on the team with 12 aces.
SUTHERLAND NEARING 1600 MILESTONE: Sutherland, already the UCI record holder, has amassed 1594 career digs and is just six away from reaching 1600 career scoops. HOMAN HITS .500: Shannan Homan (Placentia/Wake Forest) put away eight of 14 attempts with just one error to hit .500, a season-high for the middle blocker. Homan also added three digs and two block assists in the win. Currently, Homan has 144 kills and a 2.15 per-set average. The senior is putting the ball away at a .266 rate and shares the team-high with 48 total blocks. FILKINS, ROBERTSON ERROR-FREE: Alexandra Filkins (Seal Beach/Los Alamitos HS) and Taryn Robertson (Valencia/HS) put together a pair of errorless performances offensively against UC Riverside last week. Filkins put down 5 of 7 attempts with no miscues for a .714 average while scooping up eight digs. Currently, Filkins is averaging 1.07 kills per set while hitting .235. Robertson was 4 for 7 offensively for a .571 clip and handed out 25 assists. The junior setter also recorded an ace while registering four digs and a pair of block assists. Robertson tops the team with 777 assists and is tied for first with 48 total blocks. ABOUT THE TITANS: Cal State Fullerton is 12-12 overall (5-4 Big West) after splitting a pair of matches over the weekend, defeating UC Santa Barbara and falling to Cal Poly. Brittany Moore leads the Titans with 305 kills and a 3.63 per-set average. She is also second in on the team with 250 digs. Alex Wolnisty tops the team with total blocks with 67 while Cami Croteau has picked up 336 digs for a team-high. THE SERIES: The Titans defeated UCI earlier this season, 3-1, but UCI leads 38-22 in the all-time series records. ABOUT THE MATADORS: Cal State Northridge is 6-17 overall and 1-9 in the Big West. The team is led by Angela Hupp, who has 208 kills and is averaging 2.63 per set. Kelley Hanson is the dig leader with 246 while Sam Orlandini tops the squad with 623 assists. Lynda Morales has 73 total blocks for a team-high. THE SERIES: The Anteaters defeated CSUN, 3-1, earlier this season but trail 19-17 in the series records. ANTEATERS IN THE BIG WEST: Taryn Robertson remains the league leader in assist average at 10.94 while Devon Sutherland tops the conference in dig average. Kari Pestolesi is now second in the Big West in kill average at 3.65 and jumped to third in aces per set at 0.41. Alexandra Hauser (Chino Hills/Ayala HS) and Shannan Homan (Placentia/Wake Forest) are seventh and eighth, respectively in hitting percentage at .276 and .266. Lauren Kellerman is 10th in kills at 3.26. As a team, the Anteaters are first in assist average (12.99) and kills (14.06), and second in hitting percentage (.239) and digs (15.03). ANTEATERS IN THE NCAA: Robertson is 27th in the NCAA in assists per set while Pestolesi is 63rd in aces per set. Pestolesi also sits No. 68 in kill average while Sutherland is 110th in dig average.
As a team, UCI is 20th in kills per set, 21st in assist average, 60th in hitting percentage (.239) and 93rd in digs per set.

WEEKEND WRAPUP: UC Irvine handed UC Riverside its worst loss of the season as the Highlanders did not reach double-digits in two of the three sets. Pestolesi and Homan shared the team-high with eight kills apiece while Filkins and Lauren Kellerman (Escondido/HS) added five each. The Anteaters hit a season-best .375 and registered 11 service aces in the straight-set win. Sutherland led all players with nine digs and Robertson also had the match-high with 25 assists.
