UCI TRAVELS TO LBSU, UCSB: UC Irvine (15-12 overall, 10-4 Big West) plays its final matches of the season this Friday (Nov. 21) against UC Santa Barbara and Saturday (Nov. 22) against Cal Poly at Crawford Court. Both matches are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. starts.

THE STANDINGS: UC Irvine is tied for second in the Big West with a 10-4 record while Long Beach State tops the league at 12-2 (21-4). Cal Poly is also tied for second at 10-4 while Cal State Fullerton trails in fourth at 9-6. UCSB sits sixth at 6-8.

BRANDE HONORED FRIDAY: Charlie Brande, who announced his retirement last month, will be honored in a brief ceremony prior to Friday's match against UC Santa Barbara.

SENIOR DAY SATURDAY: Seniors Lauren Kellerman (Escondido/HS), Devon Sutherland (Corona/Santiago HS) and Shannan Homan (Placentia/Wake Forest) will play in their final home match Saturday and will be honored prior to first serve against Cal Poly.

ROBERTSON BREAKS INTO TOP 10: Setter Taryn Robertson posted 90 assists in two matches last week to break into the top 10 of the season records. Robertson put up 49 assists against the Beach and then dished out 41 against UC Santa Barbara to amass 1,058 and take over the No. 10 spot, surpassing Ann Warmus's 1988 total of 1036. Robertson holds the ninth spot with 1,150 assists recorded in 2006 and the No. 4 spot with 1, 431, registered last season.

Robertson is averaging 10.91 assists per set and is fourth on the team with 212 digs. The junior tops the team with 66 total blocks, including 10 solo blocks and is fifth with 98 kills.


 

 

KELLERMAN, PESTOLESI RECORD SEASON-HIGHS: Lauren Kellerman and Kari Pestolesi (Huntington Beach/Edison HS) each logged season-bests in the five-set thriller against Long Beach State.

Kellerman put away 23 kills against the Beach while Pestolesi scooped up 29 digs.

On the season, Kellerman has 320 kills and a 3.33 average. She is third on the team with 233 digs and 18 service aces.

Pestolesi leads UCI with 338 kills and a 3.56 average and is second with 301 digs. She also tops the team with 34 aces.

REUSE YOUR SHOES: The Women`s Volleyball Team, in honor of America Recycles Day, is hosting the Reuse-A-Shoe Drive. From November 8th through the 22nd, used tennis shoes can be dropped off at select campus locations or brought into a sponsored location to receive a free ticket to the UCI Women's Volleyball home game for each pair donated. The shoes will be donated and later recycled to create new sport tops for children and communities in need. Shoes with metal or spikes will not be accepted.

HAUSER MATCHES CAREER-BEST: Alexandra Hauser (Chino Hills/Ayala HS) matched a career-best with eight kills against Long Beach State and six block assists against UC Santa Barbara.

On the season Hauser is has 88 kills and 55 total blocks for the Anteaters ABOUT THE GAUCHOS: UC Santa Barbara is 10-15 overall (6-8 Big West) and looks to snap a four-match losing streak. The Gauchos suffered a pair of 3-1 losses to Cal Poly and UCI in league action over the weekend.

UCSB is led by Lauren McLaughlin, who is putting the ball away at a 3.55 clip and has 316 kills on the season. Leigh Stephenson holds the team-high in digs with 392 while Dana Vargas has 762 assists for UCSB.

THE SERIES: The Anteaters trail 59-76 in the all-time series records.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS: Cal Poly is 15-10 overall and 10-4 in the Big West. The Mustangs have won three of their last four matches, defeating UCSB and UC Riverside in action last week.

Cal Poly is paced by Kylie Atherstone's 337 kills while Jaclyn Houston tops the team with 117 total blocks. Dominique Olowolafe is second with 100 total blocks. Alison Mort has 349 digs and Hailey Fithian is averaging 10.73 assists per set.

THE SERIES: UCI trails in the series 35-15 and suffered a 3-1 loss at Cal Poly earlier this season.

ANTEATERS IN THE BIG WEST: Taryn Robertson leads the Big West in assist average at 10.91. Devon Sutherland is currently third in digs at 4.19 while Kari Pestolesi dropped to fourth in kills at 3.56 and remains third in aces at 0.36. Lauren Kellerman climbed to seventh at 3.33 in kills per set while Alexandra Hauser and Alexandra Filkins are eighth (.267) and ninth (.266) in hitting percentage, respectively.

As a team, the Anteaters own the top spots in the league in assist average (12.82) kills (13.91) and digs (15.51). They are third in hitting percentage at .203.

UCI IN THE NATION: Taryn Robertson is 32nd in the nation in assist average while Kari Pestolesi is 86th in kill average. As a team UCI is 25th in kills per set and 29th in hitting percentage,

ANTEATER ALUMNAE ON KARCH'S KRONICLES: Former Anteaters Ashlie Hain, Whitney Pavlik and Kelly Wing will appear on "Karch's Khronicles" on FOX SPORTS WEST and PRIME TICKET. In the two-minute segments designed to enhance Pac-10 volleyball coverage, Olympic Gold medalist Karch Kiraly will explain offensive systems, defensive coverage and coaching strategies using former players from UC Irvine and Irvine Valley College to demonstrate the drills. WEEKEND WRAPUP: The Anteaters went 1-1 on the road last week, losing a tough five-set match against No. 25 Long Beach and rebounding with a 3-1 win over UC Santa Barbara. Against the Beach Kellerman and Pestolesi put in a combined 37 kills with Kellerman leading the team with 23. Robertson had 49 assists and 17 digs while Hauser topped the team with three block assists.

At UCSB, Filkins hit .579 to lead all players, putting away 12 of 19 attempts with just one error while picking up 10 digs. Sutherland led the team with 19 digs while Kellerman posted a team-high 13 kills.
