Postseason Guide

The Anteaters are back in the hunt for a National Championship. Familiar faces loom in the bracket, but fourth-seeded UCI is on the rise.

2012 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS: UC Irvine has littered its season with defining marks that helped get this Anteater team to a third Big West regular season title, fourth Big West Tournament title, and second NCAA Tournament appearance:

JAN. 28: UCI starts off with a big test against No. 6 Arizona State, nearly climbs back from a six-goal deficit losing 9-8.sets a new Anteater record scoring in her 18th straight match.
JAN. 28: The 'Eaters respond with their first win in Jillian Yocum's UCI debut in net stopping seven shots in a 9-4 win over No. 9 Indiana
JAN. 29: UCI wins 12-4 over Sonoma State, freshmen Mary Jane O'Neill and Victoria Gabert score their first goals as Anteaters, Jessy Cardey scores her 100th career goal as well.
FEB. 4: Jessy Cardey and the Anteaters run over No. 12 Hartwick with a 20-5 win, Cardey scores six times in the match, the fourth time an 'Eater has ever done that, it's the fifth time UCI has scored 20+ goals in a match.
FEB. 11: The team's season high 19 steals leads to 16-4 win over Marist.
FEB. 11: Jillian Yocum saves 15 shots in a 12-6 win over No. 12 Maryland, the seventh 15-save match by a UCI keeper in program history
FEB. 12: UCI grits out a tough 9-8 win over No. 9 San Diego State after trailing by two goals in the first half.
FEB. 12: The Anteaters drop UCSD Triton Invite championship to No. 5 Arizona State, Cardey's streak of matches will multiple goals snapped at 12.
FEB. 18: UCI wins its first ever match at No. 10 LMU, 12-9, thanks to five-goal games from Cardey and Danielle Warde.
FEB. 25: UC Irvine falls, 9-6, to No. 10 LMU in the opening round match of the UCI Invite, Kate Avetoom saves her 100th career shot in the process.
FEB. 26: UCI finishes the UCI Invite with an 11-5 win over No. 15 UCSB to finish in ninth place, Cardey scores her 135th career goal passing Cortney Collyer for sixth all-time.
MAR. 3: UCI hangs with No. 4 Cal, after being tied late, it loses 8-6.
MAR. 4: No. 2 Stanford uses an 8-0 first period en route to a 17-5 win over UCI.
MAR. 10: UCI completes a sweep of a doubleheader, a hard-nosed 12-10 victory over No. 9 SDSU followed by a 17-5 win over Colorado State, Cardey's scoring streak ends at 36 games, Annika Bergesen posts her first four-goal game, Jillian Yocum records her 100th save of the season.
MAR. 17: UCI is shut down in the first half vs. Harvard, an eight-goal fourth period leads to a 15-8 win.
MAR. 31: UCI snaps No. 17 CSUN's 25-match home win streak with an 11-10 win.
APR. 8: UCI's 14-2 win over Pacific earns it the Big West regular season title, Kate Avetoom records her 100th save of the season, Danielle Warde sets an Anteater record with six steals, Hillary Estrada and the 'Eaters set field block records with three and six, respectively.
APR. 14: UCI took a lead into the half, but 12 saves from Jillian Yocum could not hold back the No. 2 UCLA Bruins in a 10-6 defeate of the Anteaters.
APR. 19: Katie Croghan finishes her senior season with a hat trick in 8-5 win over LBSU.
APR. 29: The Anteaters close out their fourth straight Big West Tournament title defeating host UC Davis, 10-5, to clinch an NCAA berth.

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT LIONS: LMU returns to the Anteaters' focus in San Diego. UCI battled with the Lions in back-to-back weeks back in February. UCI took down LMU in the first matchup for its first-ever win at LMU, 12-9. LMU returned the favor the following week by ruining UCI's own invitational shutting them down, 9-6

UCI jumped on the backs of Danielle Warde and her first period hat trick and Jessy Cardey, who joined Warde in scoring a five-goal match. LMU answered back with a defensive effort in the 9-6 win. Cardey had four more goals, but LMU began to pull away in the second period which included a goal with one second to go in the half. In both matches, LMU had four players with two goals.

The Lions are led by sophomore Alexandra Honny who netted 77 goals on the season. She also led the team with 51 steals. Kimberly Benedetti is the next big scorer with 55 goals. Six other players have scored at least 20 goals.

Elisa Ponce has been huge in net playing every minute of every match. In 29 matches, she has a goals-against-average of 6.72 while stopping 287 shots.

THE COMPETITION: UCI will take on either Stanford or Pomona-Pitzer in its second match. UCI was pummeled by the Cardinal, 17-5, in their only meeting. UCI took down the Sagehens, 15-4, in the Claremont Convergence Tournament.

The other side of the bracket includes UCLA, USC, Princeton, and Iona. UCI will play one of these schools in its final match. The 'Eaters met up with USC and Iona in last year's NCAA Tournament falling, 14-9, to USC, and defeating Iona, 15-4. UCI tussled with UCLA losing 10-6 a few weeks ago. The Anteaters haven't played Princeton  since 2005.
