No. 12 `Eaters Beat No. 10 San Diego State 6-5

IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine women’s water polo team (4-3) defeated No. 10 San Diego State 6-5 Friday night in non-conference play at Anteater Aquatics Complex.

The ‘Eaters took a 1-0 lead in the first period as senior Trudy Chancellor (Santa Margarita HS) scored a power play goal with 4:49 left. Senior Kat Plummer put UCI up 2-0 a minute and a half into the second period. SDSU would score three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead at the half. Freshman Jessy Cardey (Riverside/Poly HS) tied the match up 27 seconds into the third period for the first of four unanswered goals by the ‘Eaters. UCI went up 6-3 as sophomore Katie Croghan put one in from inside two-meters with 3:15 left in the match. The Aztecs would score twice to cut the lead to 6-5 with 2:03 remaining, but would be shutout the rest of the way giving UCI the 6-5 victory.

 

Junior keeper Lauren Davis (Downey HS) had 10 saves for the ‘Eaters. Keeper Kelly Campoli had 13 saves for the Aztecs.

The ‘Eaters will host UC San Diego Saturday at 12:00 p.m. in non-conference play at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
