Feb. 20, 2010

IRVINE, Calif. – The No. 11 UC Irvine women’s water polo team (5-3) lost 15-5 to No. 2 USC Saturday afternoon in non-conference play at Anteater Aquatics Complex.

The ‘Eaters took a 1-0 lead a minute into the match as freshman Kelsey Klatt (Fresno/Sunnyside HS) gathered up a rebound and found the back of the net. USC would score three unanswered goals to end the half. Senior Kat Plummer (Thousand Oaks HS) cut the lead to 3-2 with 6:04 left in the second quarter; before USC would score six straight goals to pull away to a 9-2 lead early in the third period. A goal by freshman Sharon Dyer (Redlands HS) would get the ‘Eaters within six goals, but that would be as close as they got the rest of the way as USC went on to a 15-5 victory.

Junior keeper Lauren Davis (Downey HS) had five saves in the opening half while sophomore keeper Morgan Vickers (Newport Harbor HS) had four saves in the second half. Tumua Anae had seven saves in the first three quarters for USC while Courtney Ray entered the match for the fourth period and had a pair of saves.

The ‘Eaters will host California Baptist at 6:00 p.m. Saturday in their second match of the day in non-conference play at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
