IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 9 UC Irvine women's water polo team (9-7, 2-4) lost 6-5 to No. 6 San Diego State Friday night in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
Jenna Schuster scored on a power play 50 seconds into the match to put San Diego State up 1-0. Junior Sarah Frost scored on a breakaway with 4:24 left in the first period to tie the match at 1-1. Anna Gonzales put the Aztecs back up 2-1 as she scored on a power play goal with 1:37 left. Senior Nicole Flacco tied the match at 2-2 on a sweep shot with 16 seconds remaining in the opening period. Gonzales scored 35 seconds into the second period for a 3-2 Aztec lead that remained until the third period. Sarah Frost tied the match at 3-3 following a breakaway on a pass from senior keeper Lauren Machanis with 3:47 left in the third. San Diego State received power play goals from Schuster and Gonzales to close the third period with a 5-3 lead. Schuster scored her third goal of the match with 4:12 left in regulation to give the Aztecs a 6-3 lead. Sophomore Kat Plummer scored on a backhanded shot with 2:58 left to cut the lead to 6-4. Plummer cut the lead further to 6-5 as she swam around a defender and threw it in off the right post with 59 seconds remaining. Gonzales picked up her third exclusion of the match with 14 seconds remaining giving UCI a chance to send the match to overtime, but the `Eaters were unable to get a shot off ending the match with a 6-5 San Diego State win.

Keeper Lauren Machanis had seven saves for UCI. Keeper Heather Fenske had 11 saves for the Aztecs.
The Anteaters return to action Saturday as they host No. 8 Arizona State at 12:00 p.m. in MPSF play at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
