No. 8 Anteaters Down No. 12 Long Beach State 7-4

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The No. 8 UC Irvine women's water polo team (15-9, 6-6) defeated No. 12 Long Beach State 7-4 Thursday night in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action at the campus pool.

 

The 49ers led the match 3-2 with 3:35 remaining in the first half before the Anteaters scored three straight goals. Junior Nicole Flacco scored with 6:23 left in the third to put UCI up 5-3. Branwyn Lee cut the lead to 5-4 three minutes later as she scored for Long Beach State with 3:09 left in the third. Senior keeper Lauren Machanis had three key saves in the final period shutting out the 49ers as UCI sealed the victory.

 

Lauren Machanis had 11 saves for the `Eaters in the win. Kristen Stagier had 10 saves for Long Beach State.

The match was a part of the Black & Blue Rivalry Series between UCI and Long Beach State and with the win the Anteaters now lead the series 29-14. The 29 points clinches the 2007-08 Black & Blue Rivalry Series title for UCI as there only a maximum of 14 potential points left available for the 49ers to win.

The Anteaters conclude the regular season Friday as they head to Los Angeles to play Loyola Marymount at 3:00 p.m. in non-conference play.
