SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 8 seed UC Irvine women's water polo team (15-11) lost 5-4 to No. 9 seed San Jose State in overtime Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship at the Aztec Aquaplex.

 

The Spartans led 2-1 after one period of play and UCI came back to tie the match at 3-3 at halftime. San Jose State went up 4-3 in the third period before the Anteaters added a goal in the fourth to send it to overtime. Juliet Moss of SJSU scored the eventual gamewinning goal with 2:44 left in the first period of the two-period overtime.

 

Senior keeper Lauren Machanis had 16 saves for the `Eaters. Junior Julia Fancher led UCI with two goals in the match.

The Anteaters will now have an off day before they play in the consolation bracket the MPSF Championship as they will face either No. 12 seed UC Santa Barbara or No. 13 seed Pacific at
9:00 a.m. Saturday at the Aztec Aquaplex.
