No. 9 Anteaters at Triton Invitational

NO. 9 ANTEATERS AT TRITON INVITATIONAL: The No. 9 UC Irvine women's water polo team (1-1) will play in the Triton Invitational this weekend in La Jolla. UCI opens the tournament against California Baptist at 10:40 a.m. Saturday at the Canyonview East Pool. The ‘Eaters will then face either No. 15 UC Santa Barbara or No. 18 Indiana in their second match depending on the results of the opening match. The Triton Invitational will conclude Sunday with UCI playing another pair of matches with the times and opponents to be determined by Saturday’s results.
WEEK IN REVIEW: UCI went 1-1 at the UC Irvine Mini Tournament over the weekend. The ‘Eaters defeated CSU Bakersfield 17-11 and lost 13-3 to No. 10 Arizona State. Junior Caitlin Haskell (Fresno/Buchanan HS) had six goals against CSUB tying the second highest single match total in UCI history.
TOP RETURNERS: Sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Vickers (Newport Harbor HS) was named 2009 Big West Co-Freshman of the Year. Senior Kat Plummer (Thousand Oaks HS) earned All-Big West second team honors and junior Cortney Collyer (Santa Barbara HS) was named All-Big West honorable mention. Caitlin Haskell tied for fifth on the team in scoring last season with 30 goals.
UCI RANKED 9TH IN NATION: The Anteaters are ranked 9th in the country in the National Collegiate Water Polo poll. The ‘Eaters ended the 2009 season ranked 9th nationally following their Big West Tournament championship.
ANTEATERS IN THE RECORD BOOK: Kat Plummer is seventh with 97 goals. Senior Erin Kiene (Fresno/Clovis West HS) is currently 17th with 53 goals and needs 10 more to enter the top-10. Junior keeper Lauren Davis (Downey HS) is fourth all-time with 122 saves and Morgan Vickers is fifth with 119.
COACH KLATT: Head coach Dan Klatt is in his sixth season leading the ‘Eaters. He was named 2009 Big West Coach of the Year after guiding UCI to the Big West Tournament championship and a Big West regular season tri-championship. He is 90-66 in his first five seasons at the helm.
