NO. 12 ANTEATERS HOST NO. 2 USC, NO. 16 CALIFORNIA BAPTIST: The No. 12 UC Irvine women's water polo team (5-3) will host No. 2 USC at 1:00 p.m. and then No. 16 California Baptist Saturday in non-conference play at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
UC IRVINE INVITATIONAL SCHEDULE RELEASED: The schedule and seedings for the UC Irvine Invitational February 27-28 have been released. The two day tournament will take place at Anteater Aquatics Complex and Corona del Mar High School. The complete schedule can be found at the Tournament Central page.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The No. 2 Women of Troy are 5-1 on the year. Three players are tied for the USC lead with nine goals on the year heading into the week. Tumua Anae has 44 saves this season.
The No. 16 Lancers are 5-4 to start the week and will play Concordia Tuesday.
WEEK IN REVIEW: UCI went 2-0 on the week with a 6-5 win against San Diego State and a 9-8 win over UC San Diego. Senior Kat Plummer (Thousand Oaks HS) led UCI with five goals on the week. Sophomore keeper Lauren Davis (Downey HS) had 10 saves against the Aztecs.
ANTEATER LEADERS: Junior Caitlin Haskell (Fresno/Buchanan HS) leads UCI with 13 goals on the year. Freshman Jessy Cardey (Riverside/Poly HS) is second with 10 goals. Senior Erin Kiene is third with nine. Lauren Davis has 19 saves to lead the ‘Eaters.
TOP RETURNERS: Sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Vickers (Newport Harbor HS) was named 2009 Big West Co-Freshman of the Year. Senior Kat Plummer (Thousand Oaks HS) earned All-Big West second team honors and Cortney Collyer was named All-Big West honorable mention. Caitlin Haskell tied for fifth on the team in scoring last season with 30 goals.
UCI RANKED 12TH IN NATION: The Anteaters are ranked 12th in the country in the National Collegiate Water Polo poll. UCI has been ranked as high as 9th this season. The ‘Eaters ended the 2009 season ranked 9th nationally following their Big West Tournament championship.
ANTEATERS IN THE RECORD BOOK: Kat Plummer is seventh with 105 goals. Erin Kiene is currently 14th with 58 goals and needs five more to enter the top-10. Caitlin Haskell is tied for 15th with 55 goals and junior Cortney Collyer (Santa Barbara HS) is 18th with 53. Keeper Lauren Davis is fourth all-time with 135 saves and Morgan Vickers is fifth with 132.
COACH KLATT: Head coach Dan Klatt is in his sixth season leading the ‘Eaters. He was named 2009 Big West Coach of the Year after guiding UCI to the Big West Tournament championship and a Big West regular season tri-championship. He is 90-66 in his first five seasons at the helm.
