NO. 11 ANTEATERS HOST SAN DIEGO STATE, ARIZONA STATE: The No. 11 UC Irvine women's water polo team (9-6, 2-3) will host No. 7 San Diego State Friday at 7:00 p.m. and No.10 Arizona State at 12:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Both Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches will be held at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The No. 7 Aztecs are 14-2 overall and 1-1 in MPSF play. Anna Gonzales leads SDSU with 36 goals on the year. The Aztecs beat UCI 9-8 earlier this year at the UCI Invitational.
The No. 10 Sun Devils are 11-8 on the year and 1-3 in MPSF play. Addison McGrath is the leading scorer for the Sun Devils.
WEEK IN REVIEW: The Anteaters went 2-1 on the road in Northern California. The `Eaters beat UC Davis 8-7 and Pacific 20-8. UCI lost 5-3 to California. The 20 goals against Pacific is the most scored by the `Eaters in UCI history. Seniors Jessica Lewis (Los Alamitos HS) and Nicole Flacco (Calabasas HS) each had five goals on the week to lead the team. Senior keeper Lauren Machanis (Carlsbad HS) had 26 saves.
UCI RANKED 11TH IN NATION: The Anteaters are ranked 11th in the country in the National Collegiate Water Polo poll. UCI ended 2007 ranked 10th nationally. The team was ranked as high as No. 4 last season which is the highest the Anteaters have been ranked in school history.
ANTEATER LEADERS: Jessica Lewis leads the team with 22 goals on the year. Junior Gianna Rossi (Fresno/Central HS) is second with 19 goals on the year. Junior Sarah Frost (Santa Barbara HS) is third with 13 goals this season. Senior keeper Lauren Machanis has 118 saves this season to lead the team.
ANTEATERS IN THE RECORD BOOK: Junior Gianna Rossi is fourth all-time at UCI with 115 goals. Senior Jessica Lewis is fifth with 105 goals. Junior Julia Fancher is seventh all-time with 80 goals. Senior keeper Lauren Machanis holds the UCI all-time record with 817 career saves.
