UC Irvine Intercollegiate Athletics Highlights UC Irvine men’s volleyball logged a historic season, while the sailing program captured a national title and the women’s cross country and golf teams earned Big West Conference championships. The Anteater men’s volleyball program, which won 21 straight matches during the season and was ranked No. 1 nationally for eight consecutive weeks, compiled a 27-5 overall record and won its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title with a 20-2 mark in league action. Junior Jayson Jablonsky was named the National and MPSF Player of the Year, freshman Brent Asuka was National and MPSF Newcomer of the Year, and UCI’s John Speraw was selected as National Coach of the Year. The Anteaters earned the at-large berth and No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament, but were upended by host Penn State in five games in a semifinal match. Jablonsky was selected as UCI’s male Athlete of the Year. UCI’s sailing program won the Intercollegiate Sailing Association’s Sloop National Championship in the fall and finished the season with a national ranking of 11th. Skipper Frank Tybor and crew Whitney Loufek were named All-Americans. The women’s cross country program won its first Big West Conference title in seven years as individual champion Amber Steen was named the Big West Athlete of the Year, Laura Olvera was the Big West Freshman of the Year and Vince O’Boyle the Big West Coach of the Year. Marie Nguyen and Kelli Vanderburg also earned all-conference honors with top-10 finishes in the league meet. Women’s golf won its second straight Big West Conference title by a staggering 43 shots in the league tournament. Sophomore Selaneé Henderson was named the Big West Player of the Year after earning medalist honors and she was joined by Angela Won and Kim Lorenzana on the all-conference first team. Kelly Crawford was named the Big West Coach of the Year after guiding the Anteaters to their third Big West title in the five-year existence of the program at UCI. UCI went on to finish ninth in the NCAA West Regional. The baseball squad advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years and finished with a 36-24 record. Pitcher Scott Gorgen was named Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year and he was a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American. Senior left-hander Glenn Swanson threw UCI’s first no-hitter in 32 years during a 7-0 win over San Diego. The UCI men’s basketball program proved the preseason prognosticators wrong by finishing second in the Big West Conference with a 10-4 mark in league play. Senior Ross Schraeder ranked fourth in the nation in three-point field goal percentage (.474) and set UCI’s career records for three-point field goals made (233) and attempted (529). Schraeder was named to ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-District 8 second team. Senior point guard Aaron Fitzgerald was named to the All-Big West first team after finishing seventh in the nation in assists at 6.6 per game. Women’s basketball player Angie Ned earned All-Big West first team honors and she was voted the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. Men’s water polo, under first-year coach Marc Hunt, finished fourth in the nation with an 18-12 record and placed second in the MPSF regular season with a 6-2 mark. Senior Dreason Barry was a finalist for the prestigious Peter J. Cutino Award and he was joined on the All-America second team by junior Tim Hutten. The women’s water polo team had the best season in the program’s history with an 18-15 record and a sixth-place finish in the MPSF. Junior Robyn Kaake and sophomore Lauren Machanis were named honorable mention All-Americans. Men’s golf, led by All-Big West first team selections Brian Edick and Garrett Sapp, finished second at the Big West Championship as did women’s tennis, led by All-Big West first team honorees Becky Bernhard and Inna Agababian. Senior Mike Beerer became UCI’s first All-American in 16 years in men’s track and field as he placed ninth in the hammer throw at the NCAA Championships. Beerer, who won the event in the Big West Championships the past two years, was UCI’s male Big West Scholar-Athlete of the Year and also was named to the ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-District 8 second team. Sophomore Chelsea Nagata became UCI’s first female swimmer to earn All-America honors as she finished seventh in the 100-yard butterfly (53.76) at the NCAA Championships. She was named co-Big West Athlete of the Year after winning three individual events and competing on a first-place relay at the conference meet. Nagata was UCI’s female Athlete of the Year. Women’s swimmer Megan Baker was named UCI’s female Big West Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In men’s soccer, junior Brad Evans was named Big West Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight season and he also was named to the NSCAA All-Far West Region second team. Women’s volleyball player Amanda Vazquez was named first team All-Far West Region and was an All-Big West first team selection along with Whitney Pavlik. Vazquez also earned honorable mention All-America honors. The university had 152 student-athletes honored as Big West Scholar-Athletes, bringing UCI’s total to 2,731 since 1983. For the year, UCI had 13 All-Americans, 77 all-conference honorees and 54 selections to academic all-conference teams. Men’s
