No. 19 UC Irvine Closes Weekend with 25-7 Win

FRESNO, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball went on another offensive rampage scoring a 25-7 victory Saturday against Columbia in Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
  • The 'Eaters followed their 32-run record on Friday with a 25-run effort tying the third-highest runs scored in a game in program history. UCI now has three of the highest scoring games in their history within their last 17 games played
  • UCI set a program record Saturday by hitting three grand slams as a team. Two grand slams came in the same inning as Caden Kendle hit the first in the fourth inning, and five batters later Will Bermudez did the same. The third grand slam came in the eighth inning as Jacob Stinson came in as a pinch-hitter and launched his first career home run as an Anteater to put the score at 25-7. The 'Eaters have now hit five grand slams on the season through 14 games and is already the most in a single season in the history of the program
  • Abraham Garcia-Pacheco accounted for UCI's fourth home run of the game which came back-to-back following Bermudez's shot in the fourth, and was the first collegiate homer for the senior
  • Kendle finished with five RBIs along with Bermudez, and finished a double away from the cycle. His home run and triple both came in the same inning as did all five of his RBIs. He also extended his on-base streak to 57 consecutive games reaching base
  • The offense collected a 10-run fourth inning and eight-run eighth inning in the game. In the four games over the weekend, UCI pushed across 71 runs in all and produced innings where they scored 11, 10, nine, and two times scoring eight runs in a single frame
  • The other record set in the game came via base on balls as UCI drew 18 walks on the afternoon. The previous record 16 had been done twice, once last season. Seven Anteaters walked multiple times and five walks produced an RBI.
  • A first in the game came from Frankie Carney who game in off the bench early and produced his first three career hits and first stolen base reaching a total of five times while driving in three and scoring three times.
  • Anteater pitching did enough as starter Trevor Hansen improved to 2-0 allowing five runs over 5.1 innings and striking out four. Max Martin also struck out four over 2.2 innings while Ricky Tibbett pitched a scoreless ninth.
The improve to 13-1 on the year and are now 7-1 away from home. UC Irvine comes back home where it will play its next seven games starting Wednesday night against UConn with first pitch at 6:00 p.m.

Postgame Thoughts from head coach Ben Orloff
"It was fun to see. Two grand slams in an inning and three in a game is unheard of, but I think it's great the success of so many guys on the team. Frankie and Stinny specifically today those guys coming in and having a big impact on the game, it was really cool to see."

"As much as this schedule was not ideal, it was really good in the fact that we knew it was going to take a full roster to get through the weekend. With us getting ready to start conference, and even the few weeks we've played we see injuries happen, so for us to get a look at so many different guys on the roster and for them to get to play in a competitive environment, that was huge for us."
